On 25 September 2023 I was the chief guest at AVS Engineering College, Ammapet, Salem, for the inauguration of the college’s Annual Day celebrations. It turned into a full day: two Memoranda of Understanding signed, a student project exhibition and a cybersecurity awareness programme for faculty and students.
Two partnerships in one day
The CyberDiplomat signed MoUs with AVS Engineering College and with its sister institution, AVS College of Arts & Science for Women. Both agreements are built on the same idea: that cybersecurity belongs in the curriculum long before students meet it at work, and that industry should help put it there.
Awareness for faculty and students together
The awareness programme ran for faculty and students in the same room, which we always prefer. Students bring the habits, faculty bring the institutional view, and the questions each group asks teach the other something. We covered the everyday risks — passwords and account takeover, phishing and social engineering, safe use of personal devices and social media — and the wider picture of where cybersecurity careers are heading.
Awareness costs little and prevents a great deal. It works best when the whole campus hears the same message at the same time.
Student projects
Between sessions I spent time at the students’ project exhibition, looking at hardware and electronics builds and talking through what the teams had made. Engineering colleges often have more practical talent on display than they realise, and it is worth telling students so.
