On 29 October 2025 The CyberDiplomat delivered a cyberpsychology awareness training for NGO staff in Alibaug, Maharashtra, organised by Educo. Dr Manoj Sharma of NIMHANS joined the session virtually to contribute the clinical perspective.
Why NGO staff
The people in the room work directly with children, families and communities. They are often the first adults to notice that something has gone wrong online — a child withdrawing, a family in distress over a scam, a young person being harassed or groomed. They are rarely given training that matches that responsibility.
The staff who notice the problem first are usually the last to be trained for it.
What the training covered
- How digital platforms are designed to hold attention, and what that does to children and young people.
- Recognising problematic use and cyber addiction — and distinguishing it from ordinary heavy use.
- Online harms that field staff encounter: harassment, grooming, financial scams and misinformation.
- How to have a useful conversation with a child or parent, without shame or panic.
- When and how to escalate, including to mental-health professionals.
Dr Sharma’s contribution grounded the session in clinical practice, which is what separates useful cyberpsychology training from generalised advice about screen time.
