In May 2023 I delivered a Techni Expert Talk, “Cybersecuring India – Research Challenges & Opportunities”, at Nagarjuna College of Engineering & Technology, Bengaluru, part of the Nagarjuna Group of Institutions. The School of Computing hosted it with the college’s Internal Quality Assurance Cell, as a one-day cybersecurity awareness programme for faculty and students.
A research agenda, not just a warning
Most campus cybersecurity talks stop at advice: choose better passwords, do not click the link. That matters, but engineering students deserve the harder question too — what is still unsolved, and where could their work make a difference?
India has the scale, the talent and the digital public infrastructure to lead on several of those questions: securing operational technology in power, water and manufacturing; the security and governance of AI systems; privacy-preserving design under the country’s data protection regime; secure hardware and supply chains; and the policy research that connects all of it to international cooperation.
The opportunity for Indian researchers is not to catch up. It is to work on the problems the rest of the world has not solved either.
