In May 2024 I joined a panel at S²A²I² — the Southern Star Army Academia Industry Interface in Bangalore, an initiative that brings the Indian Army’s Southern Command together with universities and industry.
Three worlds, one problem
Armed forces, universities and technology companies each hold part of what national security now requires, and each works to a different clock. Industry ships fast and iterates. Academia goes deep and publishes slowly. The forces need reliability, security and support measured in decades, not release cycles.
Forums like S²A²I² exist to close that gap: to let officers describe the problems they actually face, let researchers and companies show what is possible, and let both sides discover where the other is already halfway to an answer.
Most capability gaps are not gaps in technology. They are gaps in conversation.
Where cybersecurity fits
Every modern defence capability — surveillance, logistics, communications, unmanned systems — is a software and data system before it is anything else. That makes cybersecurity, supply chain assurance and the governance of AI-enabled systems central to the interface between the services and their suppliers, not an afterthought to be bolted on once a platform is delivered.
